My Boxer Dog Jumps on People…How do I Stop this Behavior?

I am changing up my blog posts to talk about other breed of dogs I have owned and loved. Remember my earlier blog about Bodie my boxer? Here are some articles that helped me when I was training him. I hope you enjoy and learn from theses well defined articles!

Does it terrify you whenever your boxer dog jumps on people? Or maybe you just find it irritating that your boxer dog jumps right on top of you at every opportunity it gets? This case could become a major problem if other people get very frightened. This will transpire if your boxer dog is either very friendly or really aggressive. Both the cases are not for yourself or your pet’s health.

There may be numerous problems whenever a boxer dog jumps on people. The problems varies from simple; like dirtying or destroying the fabrics or really severe like traumatizing or hurting people. It doesn’t matter if the boxer dog is small or big in size. A small boxer dog that jumps on people could be in the same way terrorizing to children as big boxer dogs are to grown ups.

The primary reason of why a boxer dog jumps on people, even though it is excited, is the fact that the dog was never trained that this kind of approach was not proper. It is normal among dog owner to greet an excited dog by bending down and lifting it up. This stimulates the puppy to get much more excited and jump at anyone that displays even the tiniest manifestation of fondness.

One other reason of why boxer dog jumps on people could be aggression or dominance. In this situation practice the boxer dog, as long as you happen to be quite skilled owner. Should you not have the expertise in controlling aggressive dogs then it is preferable to seek the services of a expert dog trainer. Aggressive dogs can on occasion be dangerous to their owners too.

You need to learn how to put down if your boxer dog jumps on people in excitement. Here are some tips that could be beneficial. Attempt not to greet such a dog with a lot of eagerness. An enthusiastic attitude on your regard will excite the dog a lot more and it won’t have the ability to learn just what you are attempting to educate it.

Next, if your pet does not understand that it is not adequate when your boxer dog jumps on people, you should not raise your voice at it. This could further worsen its excitement.

Do not push away when a boxer dog jumps on people. The dog may believe of it like a playful action and jump a lot more. Instead maintain your voice steady and indicate to the dog to sit back in a firm tone.

Brew To You – New Talking Toy

In my last blog, this muggle went out last Friday and a holiday at that. Needless to say, I stopped by Bed, Bath and Beyond. While browsing through the store, I came across a small bin with dog toys. One in particular caught my eye. 

The minute I picked this toy out of the bin, it went off immediately in a voice between helium induced and a Smurf.  Too darn funny. As you can see it was only $4.99 and I had to have it.

I couldn’t wait to see how Brew would react to this noisy dog toy.  I have to tell you this toy didn’t stop talking from the moment I picked it up and walked through the store. People stared while giving me funny looks. We put the toy in the trunk of the car and we could still hear it going off even in the trunk. We cracked up the entire ride home.

Carrying it into the house, the toy was babbling nonstop from inside the shopping bag. Brew, from the moment he heard the toy was all over me. When I took the dog toy out of the packaging, Brew went nuts. He wanted that dog toy in the worst way.

When the talking toy hit the floor, Brew put his mouth on the hard plastic ball and it was on….

Each time Brew’s mouth closed over the ball it would spout off and he drop it and jump backwards. He would bat it around like a cat, chasing it all over the living room. I never seen a dog twist and torque his body going after this hilarious talking toy.  We laughed so hard, I had tears running down my face. This ball is not much bigger than a tennis ball. I would advise not leaving a dog unintended while playing with this dog toy. You could even put the talking ball into a sock and tie the open end for a little more protection for your dog.

Brew To You – Harry Potter

Yep, I love Harry Potter and so does Brew. Yesterday, I ran out and bought the last installment of the Harry Potter saga. To think that I was in my late thirties when the first Harry Potter movie came out.

My better half went duck hunting early this morning so, I took the opportunity to snug-up in bed with Brew to watch the last Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Deadly Hallows part 2.

Harry Potter might’ve been targeted for the tweens, I fell in love with this series. It was like walking side by side with Harry in his journey to find salvation for, not only the witchdom, but for muggles too.

This last movie was an emotional roller coaster that had me in tears one minute, to raising my fist high in the air cheering for Harry and his friends as they headed  toward their end path. As the movie concluded, a smile touched my face and a wet muggy nose reassuringly nuzzled my arm, I said, “Goodbye for now, Mr. Potter.”

May the generations to come enjoy the magical world of Harry Potter and his friends…

And to Harry Potter,

No end shall be greater than the one cast by love.

Brew To You – TGIF

I love Fridays!

It is a chilly 6:00 am in the morning and you know where Brew is…yep, in our bed snugged down in the comforter sound asleep. Around 7:00 am or so, Brew will start whimpering or maybe bark a couple times to get my attention to lift him down from the bed.

Speaking of barking, I am not sure if it is the English bulldog in Brew or just Brew’s personality, but Brew hardly ever barks. I cannot tell you how many times Brew has scared the heck out of me. From out of nowhere, I will get a wet nose on the back of my leg or hand. The next door neighbor (they are really cool people) recently took in their son’s English setter. This little girl barks a lot at Brew from the other side of the fence, yet Brew does not make a sound. He just lays on the ground with his nose stuck under the fence wanting to play with her. Brew is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever known and he never fails to endear people to him every where we go. People cannot resist his wiggly butt and muggy face. Yet, his quietness and intense stare when he’s at home has put a few people off. Once they get to know Brew it’s all good…

When Brew does bark…WOW. His bark sounds like he’s a much bigger dog than his is.

Brew To You – How Brew and I found each other….

It’s time to tell you how Brew and I found each other. This may sound unusual, yet for some reason something told me to put a want ad on Craig’s List. I love English bulldogs and Pit Bulls, so I decided to put a want ad for an English Bulldog and Pit mix puppy on Craig’s List.

Within a few days, I got a response back from a person that had the mix puppy I wanted. We went back and forth and finally we got to meet up and I fell in love with the puppy he had. I bought him on the spot.

At first I named him Brutus. Call it laziness or whatever Brutus turned into Brew and it stuck. I have no regrets how Brew and me found each other. The main things is we DID find each other and we could not be happier!

Brew To You – Will The Real Brew Please Sit Up!

In a previous blog, I mentioned how in the mornings when Brew woke up, he came into our bedroom and thumped the side of the bed with his paws wanting to be lifted onto the bed.

I thought I would put a picture of the Brew up. As you can see,  most people continually mistake him for a boxer. Brew is an English bulldog mix.

I thought I would give you a little insight to how Brew and I found each other.

I had been without a dog since my divorce in 2006. I had a boxer named Bodie that I loved very much and I had had him since he was eight weeks old.  Sometimes, we have to do what is best for our pets. I needed to move into an apartment when my marriage ended and Bodie was use to a big backyard and freedom to run.

I gave Bodie to a loving couple that had always had boxers and recently lost a  bother and sister pair of boxers. They did not have any children and lived in a huge home. I knew deep down, no matter how it hurt me to my very soul, Bodie would never want for anything.  I, with a heavy heart and my hands shaking, put Bodie in the truck myself and watched the truck pull away until it faded into nothingness. That was one of the hardest things I had done. My eyes tear up even while I am writing this. I am disclosing this because it plays an important part of why I had not gotten another dog.

Fast forwarding to 2010. I now  live on a horse ranch. They have dogs, cats and a heck of a lot of horses. I have horses to ride, dogs and cats to play with but they were not mine. The owner of the ranch keeps telling me I need my own dog. I have never been without a dog that long in my entire life and it is time for me to find another dog to love and love me back…

Brew To You -Tip for Making your own dog toy(s)

One of Brew’s favorite toys is “Rock in a Sock”.

One day after going through my socks, I found a ton of single socks with no mates. I saved them in a bag for future use for cleaning.

Brew brought in a small river rock from outside. Brew would lay on his back and just hold the rock in his month. Fear that Brew might accidentally swallow this silver dollar size rock gave me the idea to put the rock into a couple of my spare socks I had stashed in the closet.

I slipped the rock into one sock and knotted the opened end. I then slipped the one sock with the rock into another bigger sock and knotted both ends. You can do this one more time depending on the thickness of the socks.

At any given time, I will find Brew flinging he “Rock in a Sock” toy around the house in complete content. Brew also likes to play Tug of War with his “Rock in the Sock.” The rock is light enough that if is flies free, it will NOT break anything, but has just enough weight to it that I can throw it around for Brew to run after.

Please remember to keep a watchful eye on this toy. I do changed the socks out when they get dirty or Brew chews holes in them.

Brew To You – Sunday 11/06/2011

Like every morning, as soon as Brew wakes up (he sleeps on the couch), he heads straight for our bedroom. The bedroom door bangs open and a big bully head accompanied by paws the size of mitts appear on the edge of the bed. The bed is too high for Brew to jump up on. If dad does not lift him onto the bed, Brews next bet is to try mom’s side.

At this point, I get up letting dad sleep. Brew tagging along on my heels follows me to the living room. Usually Brew will jump back up on the couch for a few more hours of much needed doggy sleep. This is my time to get on the net and get some business done. On rare occasions, Brew will feel the need to hang over the back of the couch that faces me working away on the computer and cry and whimper until I get up to spend some quality time on the couch with him.

Lucky for me, this morning Brew found burrowing into the pillows on the couch and sleeping more inviting than trying to get my attention. Whoops, I spoke too soon. I can see a smooshed face staring at me over the back of the couch.  I guess Brew needs “me” time, so off I go.

Brew To You

This is the start of a weekly–if not daily–blog about my Bulldog mix dog named Brew. It is funny how much our pets/dogs become part of the family. I have had Brew since he was 4 months old (he is now a little over a year old). Every day Brew brightens my day with his happy morning tail wags and sunny personality. I hope you will come back and leave comments about your dog(s) and what he or she means to you.

Agility Builds Confidence in Your Dog

Is your dog timid around people or other dogs? Is your dog sensitive to sounds? Agility training can provide the environment and structure to build confidence in your dog. Agility classes are a great place for people to learn about the sport and learn how to train, but the timid dog may take a long time before he is ready to venture from under your chair or off your lap.

A timid or shy dog can only learn inside their comfort zone. So, training must begin where they feel safe and behaviors must be taught in very small increments. Home will probably be the best place to train and have learning take place for your dog.

So, how do you train at home? You will need guidelines and equipment. There is a multitude of websites that can give you information on agility training. There are also books and videos that will give details and visual aids and lesson plans for beginners thru expert levels.

There is a variety of equipment that is useful and helpful to have at home. Equipment recommendations are based on your available space and location of training. Do you have a large yard that will hold 10 obstacles? Do you have a small yard where you will need setup equipment and then tear down before you can setup again? Will you be training in your garage or basement, or as some agility addicts, in your living room.

For the timid dogs make sure your equipment is safe and sturdy. The pause table is a good place to begin your agility training. A 12” high pause table, with adjustable legs for later use, is a good starting place for all size dogs. Remember with your shy dog, setup your table in an area that is very familiar to your dog. If your dog barks at anything new, just leave your pause table in your house or yard for several days, let your dog inspect and smell it on his own or with a little coaxing, but don’t push to fast, remember baby steps with the insecure dog. With treats in a dish or his favorite toy placed on the table encourage your dog to get up on the table. This may take more than one lesson, be patient. If your timid dog looses interest in food or toys when you attempt something new, trying holding him and you sit on the table. If your dog is too big to hold, have him on leash and you sit on the table. If he backs away coax him, only treat or reward him when he comes to you, never when he’s pulling back away from you or the table.

Eventually, you want your dog to be able to jump on the table with your cue word, “Table”, “Box”, “Kennel”, whatever word you use, Stay on the table as you back away and then Come when you call. Build your distance slowly so that your dog is not pushed to soon.

From Pause Table to Contact Trainer is a nice transition for shy dog. A Contact Trainer comes in different designs. We recommend a 3-Piece Contact Trainer that has one mini A-frame side, a Pause Table, and then a mini Dog-walk side. Your dog can Sit on the table and then be coaxed down the A-frame side or the Dog-walk side. Just remember with the shy dog, training is done in increments, slowly and comfortably, with a little push to stretch him, but not enough to overwhelm him to cause a shutdown.

You can follow the above techniques introducing new obstacles as your dog is able to succeed. As your dog succeeds on each new piece of equipment you will see his confidence grow.
